Mobile apps aren’t going anywhere. With adoption rates for smartphones continually increasing, an app focused on providing exposure and traffic to your business seems like a foregone conclusion – why not?
But like the many issues within app development, this isn’t a simple choice. There are many factors to consider, and in this post, we’ll have a look at whether you should create a mobile app for your business. Firstly, here are the cons:
Apps Are Not Webpages
Surely this goes without saying, but you cannot treat these two digital spaces equally – If your app is a smaller version of your website, you’ll create a terribly designed offering which may even damage your firm’s reputation. Once a website has been developed, it requires little maintenance, aside from the additional interjection of new content and information, which is a simple task.
For example, regardless of how you built your website, it’ll be optimised for Chrome, Opera, Firefox or Edge; this isn’t the case with mobile apps, as apps built for iOS or Android will require unique features, and these will need to be updated as each OS receives updates. Updating these apps can be timely and costly, something which you may not have accounted for.

Relative Infancy
Just as it is comparatively easier to generate a browser-based website, a mobile app will be much harder to create, due to the young nature of the mobile app industry. App development is much trickier and costlier than it is with websites; hence why websites have DIY-builders, and apps do not: People are still getting the hang of producing apps.
These challenges and costs will surely recede over time, but for now many apps are living examples of what can go wrong in an app’s development. Having to account for different screen sizes and operating systems, many apps are poorly optimised, incoherent and almost unfunctional. Thanks to the profit-sharing requirements of the App Store, you may also receive much less revenue than you expected, meaning that other marketing strategies may be much more favourable.
Of course, many of these concerns can be avoided through using a software development team, but you must still judge if a mobile app would be appropriate for your business. Now, on to the pros:
The New Necessity
As I mentioned at the start of this post, apps are becoming more of a requirement than an option. If you want to remain competitive, the benefits of a mobile app are clear.
If your app offers a user-friendly experience,
